It does that with the help of the many guest soloists, arrangers and conductors who work with this big band with tremendous pleasure. For instance, the band recently appeared on the Historical Jazz Route and, together with Shirma Rouse, paid tribute to the ‘Cosmopoliet’ club, now long gone. Last year the band performed with guitarist Reinier Baas in a project led by composer/conductor Jesse Passenier. For the Festival Jazz International Rotterdam, the Codarts Big Band will work with a young musician who himself was part of the band not so long ago. Jazz pianist Robert Koemans, who graduated with top honours from Codarts Rotterdam in 2016, is putting together the programme. For apart from a being a gifted pianist, he demonstrated his qualities as a composer and arranger in 2018 with his project Coal Harbour – named after Coolhaven in Rotterdam. The project received rave reviews and was performed at classical music and jazz festivals. Robert Koemans is a New Maker with Jazz International Rotterdam, which means that he will spend two years making various programmes in which he can develop further as a pianist, arranger and composer. This collaboration with the Codarts Big Band is one such programme.
