Sarathy Korwar was born in the United States, grew up in India and now lives in London. All three ingredients go into the mix in his music. Although Korwar mostly performs as a drummer today, his musical roots lie in the classical tabla education he enjoyed in India.
Then in London he focused on deploying his knowledge of Indian rhythms on drums and other non-Indian percussion instruments. A central thread in Korwar’s musical approach is a strong belief in intuition, spontaneity and improvisation. On his latest album, More Arriving, Korwar addresses such themes as immigration and colonialism.
By combining various styles and embracing diversity, he tells a migrant’s story, in his case that of an Indian in London. He enhances his message on the album with contributions from vocalists, among them rappers from Mumbai and New Delhi. This convergence of styles and embracing of diversity through the lines of a migrant’s story laid the foundations for a concert that is perhaps more typical of Rotterdam than you might at first assume.
